Microsoft’s current and present reorganization is more looking as a way to putting an end to a whole era of computing
Yes it is true that may be for the first time in its history, Microsoft, the Redmond, US based global software major is feeling the real heat. This heat is coming from different directions of a new age of computing world.
This new age world comprises of a new era of converged devices and computing systems that includes tablets and smartphone environments and most importantly, in this space there is very little room for PC. Welcome to the Post-PC era!
After this massive reorganization it is clear that Microsoft is a company searching for direction and also that the company has finally decided that it wants to write its own destiny.
There is still no doubt about the global supremacy of the company as Microsoft is surely one of the most important software engines powering the global rise of technology industry, But with this week’s overhauling reorganization for Microsoft, it has surely given its green light to looking beyond the two-plus decades of PC centric business in the tech industry. Now it would be “focusing the whole company on a single strategy,” as CEO Steve Ballmer wrote in an internal memo outlining the changes.
Devices and Services
As part of this restructuring, there are now 12 separate groups at Microsoft and the vision was understandable: in order to become a modern technology company, Microsoft has to become a company that “… will focus on creating a family of devices and services for individuals and businesses that empower people around the globe at home, at work and on the go, for the activities they value most,” Ballmer has written.
Even though the PC market is surely contracting and giving way to tablets and other smart computing devices, it is still quite large and profitable, for Microsoft at least. Today, Microsoft finds itself behind companies such as Google, Apple and Amazon on the personal and enterprise front.
At last, it is clear to everybody at Microsoft that the pleasant days of the PC era are finally set to get over. Embracing the new age segment of convergent devices, applications and services would decide on its future course of growth and fulfillment.
