Amazon Web Services has launched a new SSD backed volume type for Amazon Elastic Block Store which according to the company delivers high performance storage at a low cost.
The launched General Purpose (SSD) volumes are tailored to provide predictable performance for a broad range of workloads, including personal productivity, small to medium-sized databases, and test and development environments.
General Purpose (SSD) volumes provide the ability to burst to 3,000 IOPS per volume, independent of volume size, to meet the performance needs of most applications and also deliver a consistent baseline of three IOPS (input/output operations per second) per gigabyte. Customers only pay for the storage they provision, with no additional charges for I/O, said the release.
“We’ve heard from customers that they require cost-effective, high-performance storage. With the introduction of Amazon EBS General Purpose (SSD) volumes today, SSD technology can be applied to a broader range of use cases at a lower cost while also delivering high IOPS, low latency, and high bandwidth,’’ said Peter De Santis, VP, Compute at Amazon Web Services.
Customers can launch General Purpose (SSD) volumes using the AWS Management Console, the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), and AWS SDKs
