Dell Technologies has announced the extension of its edge solutions, which will assist retailers in fast generating more value and providing better customer experiences from data gathered in retail locations.
Retailers have embraced cutting-edge technology to stay up with industry needs and provide improved consumer experiences, from supermarket merchandising and curbside pickup to frictionless checkout and loss prevention. According to a recent survey commissioned by Dell and performed by 451 Research, a division of S&P Global Market Intelligence, this expansion will continue, with 77 percent of merchants expected to significantly boost edge installations in the next two years1. New technologies across a wide range of countries and locales, on the other hand, can lead to complicated and siloed solutions that drive up a retailer’s IT management costs if not approached holistically.
New capabilities from Dell bring together edge technologies, so retailers can easily manage and scale their infrastructure from data centers to the edge, and launch in-store and digital AI applications from partners to deliver better in-store experiences.
Simplify the retail edge to improve in-store experiences
The Dell Validated Design for Retail Edge consolidates and streamlines edge retail infrastructure and applications into a single infrastructure stack for easy deployment, administration, and support. The solution integrates VMware Edge Compute Stack to give retailers a unified management view of edge IT across all retail locations, allowing them to track system health, create and manage applications at the edge, and securely expand to new locations. The solution supports AI-based applications that help retailers use data insights to improve in-store shopping experiences such as optimizing product placement, preventing product loss, tracking inventory, assisting shoppers to avoid long checkout lines, and diverting employees to where they can be of most assistance in a store by partnering with Deep North and its intelligent video analytics platform.
Dell continues to introduce additional edge innovations across its infrastructure portfolio to help organizations simplify deployments and capture more value:
In the Dell Technologies Customer Solution Centers Innovation Labs, customers and partners may conceptualize and work on cutting-edge technologies and applications. The collaboration hubs, which have a new lab in Round Rock, Texas, assist clients in testing current edge technologies and designing custom proof-of-concept solutions that can effectively handle the particular workload demands of enterprises in retail, manufacturing, healthcare, and other verticals. Retailers, for example, may assess and test inventory tracking solutions prior to implementing them in store locations for quick and easy edge deployments.
Dell Technologies’ Enterprise SONiC Distribution 4.0, a scalable and flexible open source-based network operating system, now spans beyond data centers and to the edge. Customers can build, operate, and monitor their edge using standard data center technologies thanks to network switches that can link across many locations. The new system simplifies operations, increases flexibility, and expands business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities. For example, with the seamless networking integration SONiC 4.0 provides, retailers can more easily manage their infrastructure from their data center to retail stores and other edge locations through a single, unified fabric.
Dell’s retail edge solutions are the newest additions to Dell’s growing edge portfolio, and they complement the Dell Validated Design for Manufacturing Edge, which will soon support PTC’s latest ThingWorx-based solution, Digital Performance Management. With more than 60,000 committed specialists and partners in more than 170 countries, Dell ProDeploy and ProSupport services help retailers expedite edge installations and sustain their environments.
