The gaming sector in India is likely to grow by 20-30 percent and is expected to add 1 lakh direct and indirect new jobs by FY-23. According to a new report by the staffing firm, TeamLease Digital, the sector has grown from Rs 7037 crore in FY 2019 to Rs 14,300 crore in FY 2022 and is projected to be worth Rs 38,097 crore in FY 2026. The sector employs 50,000 people, which includes 30 percent of programmers and developers.
The industry is expected to attract Rs 780 crore in FDI in FY 2023. The sector will create new jobs over the course of next year in a variety of fields, including programming (game developers, unity developers), testing (games test engineering, quality, and assurance or QA lead), animation (animators), design (motion graphic designers, virtual reality designers), artistry (visual effects or VFX and concept artists), and other roles (content writers, gaming journalists, web analyst).
“Gamification has expanded beyond traditional gaming avenues to other developing tech fields including e-commerce, fintech, and education, among others, thanks to the convergence of Web3 and Metaverse. Due to the sector’s strong expansion over the coming years, employment will experience explosive growth as well,” said Munira Loliwala, Business Head-Specialised Staffing, TeamLease Digital.
The industry has more than 40 percent of women whose number in the workforce and leadership roles will increase, the report added.
The highest-paying profiles in the gaming industry include game producers (Rs 10 lakh per annum), game designers (Rs 6.5 LPA), software engineers (Rs 5.5 LPA), game developers (Rs 5.25 LPA), and QA testers (Rs 5.11 LPA).
