Hyderabad, New Delhi, Chennai Triples Data Centre Capacity in the Last 2 Years

Hyderabad, Chennai and New Delhi have emerged as the top data centre markets in the Asia-Pacific region as per the latest Data Centre Q3 2022 report from Knight Frank in partnership with data centre research and analytics platform – DC Byte.

The nine rapidly developing markets in the Asia Pacific region that are the focus of the report are Osaka, Melbourne, Jakarta, Manila, Hanoi, Taipei, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Chennai. Over the past five years, the total IT Power (live, under construction, and committed capacity) of data centres in the APAC area has increased from slightly under 700MW to over 3,000MW. Similar to this, as of Q3 2022, over 100MW of the total IT power in the Indian cities of Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Chennai was operational.

Together, the three Indian markets are anticipated to receive an additional 453 MW of IT power, which is now in the planning phases. This supply has increased by almost two-thirds in the last several years, effectively tripling the anticipated market capacity during this time. This whole supply is either committed to or planned to a degree of close to 50 percent.

In Q3 2022, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Chennai collectively have more than 100MW of operational live capacity. In the near future, the live capacity will practically triple due to the over 189 MW of data centre capacity that is now under development. Over 800 MW of the 1.25 GW of IT Power that is in the planning stages (committed and early-stage) have already been committed.

As of Q3 2022, Chennai has the largest live capacity (41.4 MW), followed by Hyderabad (33.7 MW) and New Delhi (32.6 MW) in terms of planned (committed and early-stage), under-construction, and live data centre capacity. While Chennai now has the largest live capacity, New Delhi, which is currently undergoing construction of 84 MW of IT supply, may soon surpass Chennai in terms of live capacity, reaching 117 MW. Hyderabad will remain a significant Data Center market since it has the biggest projected (committed and early-stage) IT Power supply among the Indian markets at 485 MW. Plans provide for pipelines of 416 MW and 352 MW in Delhi and Chennai, respectively.
