In a recent report, Gartner highlighted the key trends that will impact cloud, data center, and edge infrastructure in 2023. With economic uncertainty prevailing, IT Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) teams are expected to adapt to new technologies and work methods. Paul Delory, VP Analyst at Gartner, emphasized the role of I&O teams in mitigating the effects of economic and geopolitical forces.
Delory stated, “This won’t be a year to realize grand ambitions, but it marks a moment to refocus, retool, and rethink your infrastructure.” He urged organizations to view the current crisis as an opportunity for positive changes long overdue.
The four trends identified by Gartner include:
Trend 1: Optimization and Refactoring of Cloud Infrastructure
While public cloud adoption is widespread, many deployments are ad hoc and inefficient. I&O teams have a chance to revisit and enhance cloud infrastructure to improve efficiency, resilience, and cost-effectiveness. Gartner suggests optimizing costs, building business resilience, mitigating supply chain disruptions, and modernizing infrastructure.
Trend 2: Adoption of New Application Architectures
Growing demands require new types of infrastructure, such as edge infrastructure for data-intensive use cases, non-x86 architectures for specialized workloads, serverless edge architectures, and 5G mobile services. Gartner predicts a significant increase in containerized workloads, with 15% running on-premises by 2026.
Trend 3: On-Premises Adoption of Cloud Principles
Data centers are transitioning to platform-based colocation providers, bringing cloud-like service-centricity and economic models to on-premises infrastructure. Gartner anticipates that 35% of data center infrastructure will be managed from a cloud-based control plane by 2027. Organizations should focus on building cloud-native infrastructure within data centers, migrating workloads to co-location facilities or the edge, and embracing as-a-service models.
Trend 4: Prioritizing Skills Growth
Skills gaps remain a major obstacle to infrastructure modernization initiatives. Organizations must prioritize organic skills growth and encourage I&O professionals to take on new roles and acquire automation and cloud skills. Gartner projects that by 2027, 60% of data center infrastructure teams will possess relevant skills, compared to 30% in 2022.
To navigate these trends successfully, organizations should seize the opportunity to revamp their infrastructure and invest in upskilling their teams. By embracing these changes, businesses can position themselves for long-term success in an evolving digital landscape.
