AWS Commits $12.7 Billion Investment to Fuel Cloud Infrastructure Growth in India

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled plans to invest INR 1,05,600 crore ($12.7 billion) in cloud infrastructure in India by 2030, in response to the growing demand for cloud services in the country. The investment is expected to contribute INR 1,94,700 crore ($23.3 billion) to India’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030, while creating an estimated 1,31,700 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs annually.

AWS currently operates two data center infrastructure regions in India, namely the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region and the AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region. These regions offer Indian customers increased resilience, low-latency services, and secure data storage options. With this new investment, AWS aims to strengthen its position and meet the rising demand for cloud services across various sectors in India.

Since 2016, AWS has already invested INR 30,900 crore ($3.7 billion) in the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region. This has contributed to India’s GDP by INR 38,200 crore ($4.6 billion) and has supported approximately 39,500 FTE jobs annually in Indian businesses.

Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship in India, highlighted the significance of AWS’s investment in line with the country’s Digital India vision. He expressed his appreciation for AWS’s commitment to expanding data centers in India, which he believes will catalyze India’s digital economy.

Puneet Chandok, President, Commercial Business, AWS India and South Asia, emphasized AWS’s dedication to driving positive social and economic impact in India. He mentioned that AWS has already trained over four million individuals in India on cloud skills since 2017 and has invested in six utility-scale renewable energy projects. Chandok added that the planned investment of INR 1,05,600 crore ($12.7 billion) by 2030 will further support India’s journey towards becoming a global digital powerhouse.

AWS’s presence in India has already attracted a vast customer base, including government entities, public healthcare institutions, large enterprises, small and medium businesses, startups, and various organizations across different sectors. Additionally, AWS partners with Indian businesses through the AWS Partner Network (APN), providing support, expertise, and resources for developing, marketing, and selling customer offerings.

In addition to the investment in infrastructure, AWS has been actively involved in upskilling India’s digital workforce. Through programs like AWS Skill Builder and AWS re/Start, AWS has trained over four million individuals in cloud skills. AWS’s commitment to sustainability is also evident through its renewable energy projects and collaboration with organizations focused on water replenishment.

By making this significant investment, AWS aims to accelerate India’s digital transformation, drive economic growth, and contribute to the development of local communities. With its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and upskilling, AWS continues to play a vital role in shaping India’s digital future.
