ABB India has secured a contract to deliver electrification and automation systems for ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India’s (AM/NS India) advanced steel cold rolling mill (CRM) in Hazira, Gujarat. The appointment was made through John Cockerill India Limited (JCIL), the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the project, at AM/NS India’s flagship manufacturing plant.
AM/NS India, a joint venture between steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is establishing the new CRM as part of its downstream expansion plan. ABB India will provide advanced electrification and automation systems, including the ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system (DCS) and associated equipment and components. These systems will support enhanced energy efficiency, optimized zinc consumption, and high levels of corrosion resistance throughout the steel production process. The implementation of these technologies aims to drive sustainability initiatives at Hazira.
Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, expressed the company’s commitment to safety, innovation, and technology in their manufacturing operations. He highlighted that ABB’s technology will play a crucial role in their pursuit of creating smarter and more sustainable steels. The new processing lines are designed to produce high-quality, value-added steel that adheres to the most demanding standards, meeting the growing market demand for such products.
Frédéric Midy, Project Director at John Cockerill Industry, emphasized their mission to fight climate change and their contribution to AM/NS India’s sustainability journey. The contract with ABB India will not only enable them to support AM/NS India’s sustainability goals but also contribute to India’s low-carbon economy ambitions.
Vinod C, Local Division Manager of Process Industries at ABB, highlighted the importance of working with JCIL on this milestone project. The collaboration aims to develop one of the most sustainable, efficient, and modern steel operations for AM/NS India.
The commissioning of the new CRM, equipped with advanced processing lines, is scheduled for 2024. AM/NS India is a leading integrated flat carbon steel producer in India, boasting a crude steel capacity of 9 million metric tons per annum and state-of-the-art downstream facilities. The company offers a diverse range of flat steel products, including value-added steel, and has a pellet capacity of 20 million metric tons.
