Seagate Unveils Exos X24 Hard Drives for Hyper-Scale Data Centers

Seagate has unveiled its latest innovation, the Seagate Exos X24 hard drives. These high-capacity drives come with ten disks, each boasting a substantial 2.4TB of storage, making the Exos X24 the densest hard drive in Seagate’s lineup. This makes it an appealing choice for hyper-scale customers and enterprises running large-scale data centers, offering an industry-leading total cost of ownership (TCO).

The 24TB Exos X24, which employs conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology, provides an exceptional blend of capacity, performance, and enterprise-grade reliability. Seagate also offers an alternative shingled magnetic recording (SMR) Exos X24 configuration for select cloud customers, boasting a capacity of up to 28TB.

Designed to maximize storage capacity and rack-space efficiency, the Exos X24 caters to hyperscale requirements with powerful performance and proven technology. This 3.5-inch helium drive operates at 7200 RPM, offering SATA and SAS interfaces. It also boasts enhanced caching, delivering up to three times better performance than solutions solely employing read or write caching.

With an increased sustained data rate (SDR) of up to 285 MB/s, power efficiency, and enterprise-class reliability, the Exos X24 holds a 2.5-million-hour mean time between failures (MTBF) rating. It includes Seagate Secure encryption technology, offering various security features such as self-encrypting drive (SED), SED-FIPS, and instant secure erase (ISE). Seagate backs the Exos X24 with a 5-year limited warranty.

Seagate’s Exos X24 qualification drives are already shipping to key customers, and production drives will be available for channel distribution starting in December. Additionally, Seagate plans to leverage the same technology platform for hard drives with capacities exceeding 30TB, based on Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology, which is set to enter production in early 2024.
