TCS Sets Ambitious Goal to Equip Entire Workforce with GenAI Expertise

TCS, the country’s largest IT services exporter, plans to provide training on Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) to its entire workforce of over 500,000 software engineers, according to a senior official. Gen AI is currently in its early stages as a business opportunity, with smaller use cases, as indicated by Siva Ganesan, the head of TCS’s ‘AI.Cloud’ unit. The company is investing in preparing its staff with the necessary skills and forming strategic partnerships in anticipation of increased demand for AI offerings in the future.

While TCS is in an investment mode, focusing on upskilling its workforce, Ganesan did not specify a targeted time period for completing the Gen AI training. However, he mentioned the company’s confidence in creating one of the world’s largest AI-ready workforces, given the current training rate. TCS has already trained over 150,000 staff members in Gen AI skillsets in approximately seven months.

Ganesan highlighted that the training also covers non-tech areas aligned with the broader goals of the organization. Regarding concerns about profitability and potential compromises due to readily available tools like Chat GPT, Ganesan emphasized the complexity and rigorous execution required for Gen AI solutions. He underlined the importance of factors such as security, confidentiality, and the value derived from deploying and implementing these systems.
