The National Quantum Mission (NQM) achieved a significant milestone with the launch of a call for pre-proposals to establish Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs). Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Professor Abhay Karandikar, initiated the call on January 20, 2024, during the 9th edition of the India International Science Festival. The pre-proposal invites academic institutions and R&D labs to submit innovative proposals aligned with NQM objectives, focusing on Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices. Professor Karandikar emphasized the collaborative spirit of the mission, aiming for a meaningful impact nationally and globally.
The NQM, approved by the Cabinet in the previous year, aims to make substantial progress in the coming months, collaborating with industry and startups to translate research into deployable technologies. The DST will provide necessary resources to support successful submissions, fostering India’s competitiveness on the international stage. The call is part of the NQM’s initiative to establish four technology hubs through consortia proposals. The Union Cabinet approved the NQM on April 19, 2023, with an eight-year implementation period and a total outlay of Rs. 6003.65 Crore. The mission seeks to promote scientific and industrial R&D in Quantum Technology, fostering innovation and making India a leader in Quantum Technologies & Applications (QTA).
