Starlink Nears Satellite-Based Internet Launch in India

Starlink is moving closer to realizing its satellite-based internet plans in India as it has submitted an application to the Indian National Space Promotion & Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) seeking approval for setting up earth stations. This development brings Elon Musk’s company one step closer to implementing satellite-based internet connectivity in the country. Starlink is set to face competition from rivals like OneWeb from the Bharti Group, Amazon, and Reliance Jio’s satcom as it progresses with its plans.

Previously, Starlink applied to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for a global mobile personal communication by satellite services (GMPCS) license. While the government is currently conducting a security check for Starlink’s GMPCS license, clearance is expected in the next couple of months. A government official mentioned, “They (Starlink) have also applied to IN-SPACe. The GMPCS application is under process.”

The recent Space Policy of India in 2023 allows foreign companies to establish infrastructure and commence operations by providing satellite services in the country, contingent on approval from IN-SPACe. IN-SPACe is now the sole agency authorized to approve space activities for both government and private satellite communication players.

Once Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, secures the necessary approvals, it will still need to await spectrum allocation from the DoT. OneWeb, a major competitor for Starlink, has already obtained all required approvals but is also awaiting spectrum allocation. In addition to these companies, Reliance Jio’s satellite arm has received a GMPCS license from the DoT.

The competition in the satellite communications sector is intensifying, with companies striving for the first-mover advantage. While the satellite communications market in India is still evolving, experts believe that the technology holds significant potential, especially for remote and rural areas.
