Gartner Survey: 61% of Organizations Adapting D&A Model Due to AI Technologies

According to Gartner, Inc., 61% of organizations are rethinking their data and analytics (D&A) operating model due to the influence of disruptive artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The survey, conducted among 479 chief data and analytics officers, chief data officers (CDO), and chief analytics officers (CAO) worldwide, reveals a rapid evolution in response to technological advancements.

Alan D. Duncan, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, notes that CDAOs are swiftly modifying their operating models to support data-driven innovation and organizational agility, with data governance as a central focus.

Key Changes in D&A Operating Model

When asked about necessary changes to their D&A operating model, 38% of CDAOs plan to overhaul their D&A architecture, while 29% aim to revamp data asset management and governance practices.

Expanded Responsibilities for CDAOs

The role of CDAOs is expanding, with responsibilities including managing D&A strategy (74%), governance (68%), and accountability for AI initiatives. The survey indicates an increase in CDAOs’ involvement in generative AI (GenAI) and AI-related tasks.

Navigating Funding Challenges

Despite increased funding for D&A initiatives, 46% of CDAOs face budget constraints. Duncan suggests that presenting compelling business cases to CFOs can secure better funding and executive support.

Future Outlook

CDAOs must prioritize organizational influence and measurable impact to avoid assimilation into technology functions by 2026. Gartner’s “CDAO Agenda 2024” report and webinar provide further insights into navigating these challenges.
