SiMa.ai and TRUMPF Forge Strategic Alliance to Enhance AI-Powered Laser Systems

TRUMPF, a leading high-tech firm, and SiMa.ai, specializing in software-centric, embedded edge machine learning system-on-chip technology, have entered a partnership aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into laser systems. The collaboration focuses on enhancing TRUMPF’s laser systems for welding, cutting, marking, and powder metal 3D printing with advanced AI capabilities.

“AI holds significant strategic importance for TRUMPF. Leveraging our expertise in laser processes and manufacturing, we are poised to develop intelligent software solutions for industrial production,” stated Richard Bannmüller, CEO of TRUMPF Laser and Systems Technology.

Both companies bring unique strengths to the table: TRUMPF contributes deep domain knowledge in laser applications, while SiMa.ai offers its expertise in machine learning system-on-chip (MLSoC) technology.

“The rapid evolution of AI technology is reshaping how industries harness emerging capabilities. SiMa.ai’s robust MLSoC and adaptable software, coupled with TRUMPF’s profound process understanding, enable AI-driven solutions that propel the industry forward,” said Harald Kröger, Head of Sales and President of Automotive Business at SiMa.ai.

SiMa.ai, headquartered in San Jose, California, with a presence in Bengaluru, India, employs approximately 200 professionals. Its ML applications running on SiMa.ai’s MLSoC platform deliver a tenfold increase in performance and energy efficiency, enhancing applications from computer vision to generative AI within minutes. TRUMPF, with around 90 global employees dedicated to AI, focuses primarily on product development.

Accelerating Electric Vehicle Production
The collaboration aims to streamline complex material processing. Compact and energy-efficient AI chips will be seamlessly integrated into laser systems. AI-optimized sensor technology will enable real-time monitoring and quality assessment during laser welding, analyzing over 3,000 images per second. This real-time AI-driven quality inspection in laser welding is poised to replace intricate testing processes, particularly in electric vehicle production.

Furthermore, battery manufacturers can enhance production quality in real time, reducing rejection rates and potentially lowering electric vehicle costs for consumers.
