Zoom Video Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZM) has officially introduced Zoom Phone in India, marking its first cloud-based phone service in the country. Licensed by India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the service is now available starting with native India phone numbers in the Maharashtra Telecom Circle (Pune), with plans to expand to key regions such as Karnataka (Bangalore), Tamil Nadu (Chennai), Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad), Mumbai, and Delhi.
Zoom Phone aims to support multinational corporations (MNCs) with a presence in India and local companies, providing a modern and user-friendly solution for their hybrid and distributed workforces. The service offers global coverage across 50 countries and territories, enabling businesses to maintain seamless communication.
Zoom India secured the Unified License with Access – All/PAN India and Long Distance licenses from the DoT in April 2023. Since then, the company has focused on building a dedicated domestic infrastructure for Zoom Phone, ensuring full compliance with regulatory standards. This development positions Zoom as a leader with the launch of India’s first licensed cloud private branch exchange (PBX) service, featuring local phone numbers.
“Zoom’s cloud PBX service meets the regulatory requirements of India’s Unified Telecom license, which necessitates the development of local interconnection infrastructure. This shows our commitment to offering a trusted, compliant service for our customers,” said Velchamy Sankarlingam, President of Product and Engineering at Zoom. “Zoom Phone has experienced rapid global growth, including securing five customers with over 100,000 seats in Q1 FY25. Our Indian launch reflects our dedication to delivering high-quality cloud services while investing locally to ensure compliance and service excellence.”
With a user-friendly interface, Zoom Phone delivers secure and flexible voice communication integrated into Zoom’s broader platform, including Zoom AI Companion. It supports local telephony services and is available as an add-on for existing paid customers. Enterprises can use the platform to replace traditional PBX systems, consolidating communication needs into one seamless solution. The platform supports inbound and outbound calling via the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
“We are thrilled to introduce Zoom Phone to India, starting with the Maharashtra Telecom Circle. This service will empower multinational and local businesses to support flexible work styles, enhance employee engagement, and improve customer experiences,” said Sameer Raje, General Manager and Head of India & SAARC at Zoom. “The launch of Zoom Phone underscores our commitment to the Indian market and our mission to provide reliable collaboration tools that solve real business challenges.”
Zoom Phone’s capabilities are further enhanced by AI features, such as post-call summaries, voicemail prioritization, and task extraction from voicemails. This allows users to focus on their conversations without worrying about taking notes. The service integrates seamlessly with major business applications, contact center partners, and hardware providers, offering businesses an all-in-one collaboration platform.
“The demand for Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) solutions integrated with telephony is rising in India. Zoom Phone’s enterprise-class features address the growing need for modern communication solutions among both local and global businesses,” said Krishna Baidya, Senior Industry Director at Frost & Sullivan. “Its scalability, security, and user-friendly interface make Zoom Phone a standout option for businesses seeking a unified communication platform.”
With this launch, Zoom aims to support the evolving communication needs of businesses in India, offering a scalable and reliable platform designed for today’s hybrid work environment.
