On Wednesday, the Karnataka government and Wistron (ICT Service Management Solutions) inked a memorandum of understanding to establish a laptop manufacturing facility in the region. The Taiwan-based company is set to invest ₹1,500 crore in the project, anticipating the creation of approximately 3,000 job opportunities. The Large and Medium Industries Minister, M B Patil, disclosed that the company has requested 32 acres of land for the venture, with the government actively considering suitable locations in the Bengaluru region. Scheduled to commence work in July, the plant aims to start producing laptops by January 2026. Minister Patil emphasized the groundbreaking nature of this endeavor, highlighting that the Industry 4.0-aligned facility, boasting full automation, will manufacture laptops for various brands. Additionally, more than 50% of the laptops produced will be earmarked for export. Beyond laptop manufacturing, the plant will also produce Internet of Things (IoT) components and parts related to electric vehicles (EVs). Minister Patil underscored the broader significance of this initiative, emphasizing its role in fostering innovation, generating employment, and positioning Karnataka as a leader in the electronics manufacturing sector. The signing of the MoU saw the presence of senior officials from Wistron and the state government.
