The explosive growth of artificial intelligence is creating an unexpected challenge for enterprise IT buyers and a defining opportunity for India’s technology channel. As hyperscale AI providers accelerate investments in data centres, demand for high-performance memory is reshaping the global semiconductor supply chain. This is driving up prices for conventional DRAM and SSDs used in enterprise servers, storage systems, laptops and AI-ready PCs. Industry leaders believe Indian partners that adapt early by strengthening procurement planning, supply-chain visibility and advisory capabilities will be better positioned to navigate the disruption.
Unlike previous semiconductor shortages, the current market pressure is being driven primarily by AI infrastructure rather than consumer electronics. Memory manufacturers such as Samsung, SK hynix and Micron are prioritising the production of High Bandwidth Memory, or HBM, which is required for AI accelerators and large GPU clusters. As more production capacity shifts towards HBM, the availability of conventional DRAM used across enterprise infrastructure is becoming tighter, placing sustained upward pressure on prices.
The changing market dynamics are already raising concerns across the global channel ecosystem. Patrick Zammit, CEO of TD SYNNEX, recently said, “There’s a shortage issue and a big price increase. I think price is an even bigger issue than the shortage. We should expect further price increases throughout the year because the memory price increases are not over.” He also highlighted that distributors are shortening quotation validity periods as component prices become increasingly volatile, making it difficult for partners to guarantee hardware pricing over longer project cycles.
Storage availability is also beginning to tighten. Jason Bystrak, Senior Vice President at D&H Distributing, said, “The SSDs in particular is another area where the hyperscalers are buying up supply and limiting supply for others.” This suggests that the impact of AI infrastructure demand is no longer limited to high-end AI memory but is gradually spreading across wider storage and enterprise computing categories. The rapid expansion of AI data centres by cloud providers is fundamentally changing how memory manufacturers allocate production. Samsung Electronics has indicated that global memory supply constraints could continue for several years as production remains heavily committed to major AI infrastructure customers. The company expects supply conditions to remain challenging as demand for AI computing capacity continues to accelerate.
Micron has also disclosed that major customers, including AI infrastructure and chip companies, are entering multi-year supply agreements. This reflects a broader shift in the memory industry, where customers are increasingly reserving capacity in advance instead of relying on short-term or spot-market purchases. Such arrangements may further reduce the flexibility available to smaller enterprise buyers and regional channel partners. SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung has also warned about the severity of the situation, stating, “We forecast that next year will be the worst year in the industry’s history from the supply perspective.” He added that demand could continue to exceed supply for several years despite aggressive capacity expansion by manufacturers.
For India’s system integrators, value-added resellers, distributors and managed service providers, the impact will go beyond rising hardware prices. Large enterprise projects involving AI-ready servers, GPU infrastructure, storage platforms, virtual desktop infrastructure and next-generation AI PCs may increasingly face longer procurement cycles, repeated price revisions, reduced product availability and pressure on fixed-price project margins. These challenges are likely to be particularly relevant for sectors such as banking and financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, government, education and Global Capability Centres, where AI investment is gathering momentum. Organisations in these sectors are expanding data, cloud and AI infrastructure, which means delays or unexpected cost increases in memory and storage could directly affect project timelines and technology budgets.
However, the disruption also creates a significant opportunity for Indian channel partners to evolve beyond transactional hardware sales. Rather than competing only on price, partners can help customers forecast infrastructure requirements in advance, align procurement with AI adoption roadmaps, optimise server and storage configurations, review refresh cycles and secure product allocations earlier through stronger relationships with OEMs and distributors. As enterprise customers face a more volatile supply environment, the ability to provide procurement guidance and infrastructure planning could become a major differentiator. Partners that understand both technology architecture and supply-chain conditions will be better placed to advise customers on alternative configurations, phased deployments and long-term capacity planning.
The AI revolution is therefore no longer limited to GPUs, models and software platforms. It is beginning to influence the economics of almost every enterprise infrastructure purchase, including servers, storage, laptops, edge devices and data-centre systems. For India’s technology channel, future success will depend less on reacting to hardware demand after a requirement emerges and more on anticipating that demand earlier. Partners that combine market intelligence, proactive customer engagement, technical advisory and stronger supply-chain planning will be better positioned to protect customer projects, preserve margins and build deeper long-term relationships.
